If you’ve ever thought about driving big truck and trailer units for a living and wondered where to start, then this is the place.
Mainland Driving School and Ara Institute of Canterbury have developed a Road Transport programme designed to prepare students for a career in the road transport industry. The course is designed to give you as much practical experience as possible while learning the theory behind everything you do.
The programme is 30 weeks in total and includes practical training with Mainland Driving School, gaining Class 2, Forklift and DG endorsements, and a work placement. The remaining 22 weeks sees students completing modules to further develop the theory aspects of heavy vehicle driving, and applying this knowledge in work-related situations.
Who can do this course?
To be eligible for the course you will need to have held your Class 1 full licence for at least 6 months and:
- Be fit and healthy, capable of lifting heavy items when required
- Be able to pass drug and alcohol testing
- Pass a drive assessment in a manual vehicle
- Pass a Ministry of Justice criminal history check
- Have a great attitude
- Complete an interview
